The Academic Fight Club

The Academic Fight Club

I recently posted an article on TheGradStudentWay blog pertaining to the Rules of The Academic Fight Club. The 'club' analogy is a loose reference to my perception of the 'secret society' mentality cultivated within the walls of higher education. While this mentality is slowly changing, many postdocs and graduate students still find it extremely challenging to navigate the 'alternative' career path streams outside of the hypothetical academic ocean. In this article I present what I believe to be the 8 Rules of the Academic Fight Club, a unifying storyline/plot, and 7 Rules to Makeover Your Career Path. I encourage you to visit the site and leave your comments and work towards increasing awareness.

I've always considered the scientific life as a kind of priesthood that demanded the usual poverty, chastity and obedience vows. After all, the first scientists were priests and philosophers. I think the mentality of these first scientists has carried over into the modern scientific sphere and might help explain why postdocs are reluctant to "leave the priesthood," negotiate for higher rates of pay, or ask for more reasonable working hours. And God help you if you go into industry- instant ex-communication!
